Phaedrus Estate, 2017 B14 Victorian Championship

Safety Beach Sailing Club, March 18th to 19th and Black Rock Yacht Club, April 1st and 2nd.

Day 1

        Bright sunny conditions welcomed the B14's to Safety Beach, in what was once more a great beach day with mid 30's forecast with light breezes. With a fleet of 7 boats down on previous years titles due to various reasons, but it was still going to be an epic championship.

RACE 1    The fleet had an even start in the light 5 knot north easterly with the boats searching for the breeze up the middle of the course. Boats sailing close to the cliff were able to gain a nice lift and a bit more pressure. Amazingly Oliver McKeon and Dave Cunningham(Bonework)rounded the windward mark 1st in the light conditions not the lightest combination going around. The rest of the field were in close pursuit however with the wind moving more to the north during the downwind leg, the race turned into a soldiers race. Ollie McKeon and Dave Cunningham still leading after the second lap decided upon a third lap of the 2 lap race, Craig Garmston and Paul Newman (Snatch) followed but Bangers and Louis read the flags correctly and crossed the line for the race win. Jason Dunsmore and Jeremy Albert sailing for the 1st time together finished 2nd which was a fantastic effort.

RACE 2     was started in an ever weakening westerly breeze of about 4 knots. The basically split in two, garmston and Newman searching for the pressure went right followed by the all girl crew of Freya Vicery and Mandy rounded the windward mark 1st and 2nd respectively. With the wind dying rapidly the race was shortened at the bottom mark giving Snatch the win.

Day 2  No wind, but we did enjoy watching the start of the keel boat race from the balcony. And the club race which they tried to start in a narrow band of breeze off shore.

We now look forward to the Black Rock Skiff Regatta to decide the Victorian Champion. with 6 races still scheduled anyone can win this and further entries are encouraged.
